Biography

Rachel Hills lives in Sydney, Australia. She is Associate Editor of independent news and analysis website NewMatilda.com and writes for publications including the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, YEN, Russh, Girlfriend, The Monthly and others.

Writing: Rachel’s key interests are gender, media, politics, technology, sexuality and popular culture, but she has written about everything religious groups that try to turn gay teenagers straight, to Mark Latham’s influence on Australian politics, to summer school, wank-free networking and whether or not life really is better blonde. Editing: Rachel is a big picture strategist and a small picture perfectionist with experience in publication design implementation, staff management, commissioning and subediting for a range of independent and mainstream publications. She specialises in making complex issues interesting and accessible to a broad, youth audience. Past projects include Interface, a collection of new writing and art by Australia’s next generation of public intellectuals; electionTracker.net, which sent four journalists aged 25 and under on the campaign trail during Australia’s 2004 Federal election; and Go, a quarterly magazine for independent travelers.

Public Speaking: Rachel has spoken at writers’ festivals, conferences, universities, corporate events, and on television and radio on issues including media literacy, feminism, online political and election coverage, blogging, Australian culture, generationalism and others. An informed yet relatable speaker, she has given workshops and motivational talks on working as a young woman in the media.

Events: Rachel is committed to building and developing Sydney’s arts, media and politics communities. She is a co-host of MediaBistro.com’s Sydney events.
