Rachel Hills is a journalist, blogger, editor and public speaker based in Sydney, Australia. Her work has been published in publications including the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Australian, Russh, Cleo, YEN, Girlfriend, The Monthly, The Bulletin, Vogue, The Big Issue, The Walkley Magazine and others.
Writing: Rachel is a widely-published freelance writer, specialising in social analysis. Her key interests include gender, media, politics, technology and popular culture, but she has written about everything religious groups that try to turn gay teenagers straight, to Mark Latham’s influence on Australian politics, to summer school, wank-free networking and whether or not life really is better blonde. Editing: Rachel is a big picture strategist and a small picture perfectionist with experience in publication design and implementation, staff management, commissioning and subediting for a range of online and print publications. She specialises in making complex issues interesting and accessible to broad and niche audiences. Past projects include Interface, a collection of new writing and art by Australia’s next generation of public intellectuals; electionTracker.net, which sent four journalists aged 25 and under on the campaign trail during Australia’s 2004 Federal election; and Go, a quarterly magazine for independent travelers. She is currently employed as Deputy Home Page Editor at ninemsn.com.au.
Public Speaking: Rachel has spoken at writers’ festivals, conferences, universities, corporate events, and on television and radio on issues including media literacy, feminism, online political and election coverage, blogging, Australian culture, generationalism and others. She also facilitates regular workshops and motivational talks on working in the media.
